Our Take: Zero Maintenance Ultraportable Is Ready for the Road

The UScooters Booster Sport is a brilliant scooter made by E-TWOW that is one of the most "commuter-ready." It is lightweight, very compact, durable, and requires zero maintenance.

Tipping the scales at just 24 lbs, the Sport is one of the lightest legitimate scooters on the market. It folds down to just 37 in by 11.8 in wide, making it convenient to bring anywhere — your office, a cafe, in a shopping cart at the store, in a trunk and possibly even in a large backpack.

The Booster Sport has a mostly metal body with amazing fit-and-finish. E-TWOW, the manufacturer, has a reputation for building nearly invincible scooters that last their owners thousands of miles. It has solid rubber tires that will never go flat. It also packs a surprisingly powerful 500-watt motor, which will beat out a typical shared scooter and gives a top speed of 24 mph.

Overall, the Sport is one of the most affordable ultra-portable electric scooters on the market. In essence, it's an attractive no-nonsense scooter that travels well and will fit anywhere.

Acceleration

The pint-sized Booster Sport accelerated from 0 to 15 mph in 6.3 seconds and to 20 mph in 10.2 seconds. This is about the same rate as a typical shared scooter such as the M365, except the shared scooter tops out at 15 mph, and the Booster Sport keeps gaining speed.

You can see all our independent, real-world electric scooter performance tests.

Hill Climb

The Booster Sport has modest hill-climbing capabilities. We tested the Sport on our 200 ft, 10% grade hill-climb test with a 165 lb rider, and reached the top in 19.2 seconds at an average speed of 8.2 mph.

For comparison, this is on par with a typical shared scooter which completed the hill climb test in 20.8 seconds at an average speed of 6.6 mph.

Top Speed

The UScooters Booster Sport has a top speed of 24.3 mph, according to our test on flat ground with a 165 lb rider. This is one of the highest top speeds of any ultra-portable scooter.

For comparison, the dual-motor Unagi E500 had a tested (unlocked) top speed of 20 mph; the Glion Dolly had a top speed of 15.8 mph; the UScooters Booster V had a top speed of 23.9 mph; the Xiaomi Mi M365 (comparable to a shared scooter) had a top speed of 16.7 mph.

Range

We tested the range of the UScooters Booster Sport to be 11.8 mi with a 165 lb rider. The range test was performed on an urban loop that consists of all types of terrain, hills, and frequent stops. The scooter was ridden at the highest speed that was safe and in the fastest, least energy-conserving mode.

The Booster Sport has a 314 watt-hour lithium-ion battery pack.

Braking

The Booster Sport has a regenerative brake activated by a very comfortable and ergonomic thumb controller, and a friction brake (foot brake) activated by stepping down on the rear fender.

In reality, most people don't ride with their rear foot up in the air, so the regenerative brake is used the vast majority of the time.

We tested the stopping distance of the Boosted Sport from 15 mph to be a mediocre 40 ft when using only the regenerative brake. However, in an emergency, if you use both the regenerative and foot brake, the stopping distance decreased to just 19 ft.

Ride Quality

Overall, the ride quality is so so. On smooth roads, you'll have no problems, but on rough terrain, you'll feel the bumps. This is the main tradeoff for having such a portable and low-maintenance scooter.

To be compact, the Booster Sport has small tires, which unfortunately don't roll over bumps as well and tend to transmit more force to the rider. The tires are also solid rubber (airless), which are immune to flats and durable but lack cushioning compared to pneumatic (air-filled) tires.

Fortunately, the Booster Sport has front and rear spring suspension hidden in its frame — this does make a big difference. It will dampen some rough patches you'll encounter on the road, but don't expect any miracles.

A final aspect of this scooter that is inherent in the ultra-portable category is the smaller deck, which measures 16.8 in long by just under 6 in wide. You'll need to keep your feet very close together, which is not as comfortable as scooters with larger decks.

Overall, this scooter is best suited for average to good quality roads and for riding in fair weather. Its small form factor is perfect for short rides — those lasting just a few miles — but doesn't have the ride quality to be comfortable for long rides.

Features

Portability

Portability is the killer application for the UScooters / E-TWOW line of ultra-portable scooters, and the Booster Sport is no exception.

The Booster Sport weighs just over 24 lbs. It includes a convenient carrying handle that allows you to easily lift the scooter in one hand.

Besides weighing only 24 lbs, the Sport also folds into a tiny package due to a telescoping stem and foldable handlebars. The folded size is just 37 in long by 6 in wide — this one of the smallest legitimate scooters on the market. You can fit it into places that other scooters can only dream about.

The Booster Sport easily fits into the trunk of even a very compact car. It also fits into shopping carts, under desks, and even in front of your feet in a car — anywhere you can imagine — is no problem for this scooter.

Cockpit

The Sport has a clean cockpit with thumb controls for braking and accelerating that are super ergonomic. It is very convenient to have brakes that are so easy and quick to activate. The control on the left is for regen braking. The control on the right is the thumb throttle.

The central LCD is fairly bright — though difficult to see in full sunlight, and has a handful of rubberized buttons for controlling mode, power. An additional feature that we were pleased to see is the high-pitched digital horn that can be used to alert others to your presence.

Both handlebars fold quickly and easily via a spring-loaded mechanism and have minimal wiggle when locked into place. The grips are thick, comfortable rubber. Due to the compact size, the overall handlebar width is narrow and takes some time to get accustomed.

The handlebar-to-deck height is adjustable from 36 in to 39 in.

Lights

The Booster Sport has built-in, high-mounted front lights as well as a fender-mounted rear light. The headlight is an array of white LEDs that are relatively bright but lack an optic to help project the light ahead. As a result, the light spreads out quickly, and though it will make you visible to others, it won't illuminate the road brightly in front of you.

For riding at night, we recommend an additional high-mounted taillight and possibly a headlight for maximum visibility.

Read our complete guide to staying visible at night.

Tires

The UScooters Sport has front and rear 7.5 in solid (airless) tires. These tires are made from somewhat hard rubber that is incredibly durable and utterly immune to flats. These tires are truly maintenance-free, with the exception that they will need to be replaced after a few thousand miles of use.

The downside to the tires being so durable is that they do not provide any additional cushioning to the ride compared to pneumatic (air-filled) tires. The harder rubber they are made of does not perform as well in wet conditions, meaning that you should exercise additional caution when turning or braking.

Deck

The Booster Sport has 16.8 in by 5.9 in of standing space on the deck. The deck has 3 in of ground clearance, which is on the lower side, and you should exercise caution when riding over terrain that could bottom out the scooter or when dropping off a curb.

Build Quality

The UScooters Booster Sport, like its more premium brother, the UScooters Booster V, has stand-out build quality and excellent fit-and-finish.

The scooter feels tight, and all the moving mechanical parts are smooth and strong. Despite its lower weight, the scooter is made of a surprising amount of metal and has a high-quality painted finished.

The scooter is custom-designed and manufactured under high-volume conditions by E-TWOW, one of the largest scooter producers in the world. The Booster Sport is not put together from common parts that are shared in the majority of scooters. Consequently, the build quality of this scooter is incredible. Everything fits together nicely and feels solid. We put this scooter through our standard drop test, which it had no problem with.

During our review process, we accidentally dropped the scooter down a flight of stairs — which definitely wasn't intentional, and we don't recommend. The scooter was dented, and one of the front reflectors was slightly smashed, but the function was otherwise unaffected.

The scooter not only gives the impression of quality, but E-TWOW (the company that manufactures the UScooters Sport) brand is widely known in Europe. Owners report putting thousands of miles on these scooters with few or no repairs — we've seen some odometers that have logged more than 16,000 kilometers (nearly 10k miles).

Conclusions

The UScooters Booster Sport is an affordable ultra-portable scooter that you can take anywhere. Compared to other portable scooters like the Glion Dolly and Unagi, the Sport is lighter, more compact, and has a higher top speed. In the scheme of ultra-portable scooters, it has less range compared to the more premium UScooters Booster V, but is significantly less expensive.

What we love about the Sport is its quality, durability, and you can bring it basically anywhere. With this scooter, you don't need to worry about finding a place to lock it up outside. The Sport is at home under your desk, in a shopping cart, or even slung over your shoulder.

The Sport is not for riders who want to go ultra-long ranges or otherwise want a full-sized, comfortable cruiser. The Sport is optimized for portability and durability at a cost of ride quality and performance. If you want more performance or weight, you'll need a heavier scooter.
