Best mid-priced electric scooters
In this best of, we compare electric scooters from the mid-priced, under $600 commuter category. This price point is the most competitive and has the best selection of models. Picking a single definite winner wasn’t possible, but three excellent electric scooters rose to the top:
- Xiaomi Mi M365
- Fluid Freeride Horizon S
- iWatMotion iWattBoard R9

Best for light riders: Xiaomi Mi M365
The world’s most popular electric scooter doesn’t disappoint. In fact, the Xiaomi Mi M365 is the most popular electric scooter for scooter sharing companies as well as personal buyers, and is a cornerstone of the category at around $500 MSRP.

Best for light riders (Europe only): R9 Extreme

We chose these criteria because we consider this class of scooter to be a notch above the budget scooters. As a “mid-priced commuter” style scooter, we chose criteria that make the scooter somewhat able to be carried, yet also having the range and durability to make it at least 15 miles round-trip. Now this is manufacturer claimed range, which is about 30% higher than what real-world users experience.
This particular category of electric scooters, which we like to call commuter electric scooters, is the most popular price category.

- Max Load: >215 lbs
- Speed: >15 mph

R9 Extreme > Xiaomi
Basically, the R9 Extreme is a mirror image of the Xiaomi. However, the R9 Extreme is less expensive, adds rear suspension, a two year warranty, and a few other trivial features.
Unfortunately, the R9 is only sold in Europe while the Xiaomi is sold worldwide.
Joyor A1 vs Fluid FreeRide Horizon S
The other two scooters, Joyor A1 and Fluid FreeRide Horizon S, are very similar as well. Both have just one pneumatic tire, but have a higher weight limit of 260-265 lbs (compared to the R9/Mi M365 of 243/220 lbs).
They both have front suspension and drum brakes on the rear. The Horizon S weighs a bit more at 33 lbs vs 25 lbs for the A1, but adds one feature no other scooter has, a 350 watt motor along with a top speed of 20 mph. All other scooters in the top 4 have a 250 watt motor and 16 mph top speed.
Additionally, the lights on the Horizon S are much brighter than the Joyor A1. Between the Joyor A1 and the Horizon S, we would have to prioritize the beefy motor in lieu of the weight.
The Final Three
We are now left with three scooters: R9 Extreme, Xiaomi M365, and Horizon S. Basically, the R9 Extreme and M365 are similar, but if you live in Europe, the R9 Extreme is a much better value.
If you are looking for a more beefy electric scooter, one that will carry more weight, higher top speed, a more powerful motor, and better lights for night-time driving the Horizon S is for you. The sacrifice is a bit heavier scooter, a few miles in range, and one pneumatic tire (the M365 and R9 Extreme have dual pneumatic).
Unlike the best budget scooter under $300, this price category is not so clear, which is why we are giving three awards.
