Best Adult Electric Scooters (September 2019)
Our methodology for picking the best electric scooters for adults is to consider a number of factors that make a given scooter the best.
We start off by comparing electric scooters to others at a given price. This helps whittle down our list. Some electric scooters don’t have the right specs to even be considered a top electric scooters. For example, we consider specifications such as tire type, weight, top speed, charging time, battery capacity, battery type (lithium ion etc). The scooter must have a lithium ion battery.
Of course, the maximum weight capacity of the electric scooter and motor power should be sufficient for adults. We don’t consider any electric scooters that can’t carry at least 220 lbs, the weight necessary for an adult.
Next, we carry out exhaustive performance testing. We don’t take what the electric scooter manufacturer says for granted. We test the real-world range, the top speed, acceleration, and braking distances. We compile and evaluate all of this performance information and factor it into the ratings for the best scooter.
Finally, to be the best, the electric scooter also needs to have the top-rated customer service and warranty. All of the top scooters have quality customer service and best-in-class warranties.
In conclusion, now that you understand the methodology for selecting the best electric scooters for grown ups at every price range, start reading below to find out what they are!
GoTrax GXL Commuter V2
We absolutely love the GoTrax GXL Commuter V2 and can’t say enough good things about it. It is an amazing value for the price and ticks all the boxes for features we look for: pneumatic tires, a disc brake, reasonable weight, and quality construction. All these factors helped the GXL V2 find a spot on the best escooters for adults list.

- Zipping around college campuses
- “Last mile” commuting
- Super portable for mixing with other modes of transportation
- Amazing value
- Great entry-level scooter
- Daily commuting of 6 to 10 miles
The scooter is super portable and at 26 lbs, about as light as they currently come. Though it doesn’t have the bomb-proof construction of a Dualtron scooter, build quality is good. Fit and finish is excellent and there aren’t nagging creaks or loose steering that you might expect on a cheaper scooter.
The design and interface aren’t over-complicated; the scooter doesn’t have over-the-top swag lighting. Everything about it is simple and clean. We really appreciate a simple scooter that is just straightforward to use and works. The 16 mph speed isn’t insane, but if you’re new to scooters you’ll find it fun and surprisingly zippy.
GoTrax has a strong US presence with offices in Colorado and Texas and has excellent US-based customer support. We have contacted them numerous times about their scooters and received fast and helpful responses.
Even the best electric scooter is going to have some cons. The main drawback of this scooter is its short range, which we have tested to be 10.1 miles. This doesn’t sound like much, but if you’re commuting a few miles back and fourth to work or around a college campus, this will do the job. You can also keep a charger at your workplace or destination and charge before the ride home.
The second drawback is that though the scooter is zippy on the flat, especially if you’re not pushing the weight limit, the 250 watt motor isn’t powerful enough to take on huge hills. If your commute involves steep inclines, expect that you’ll have to add in some of your own kicking to slowly get up really steep hills.
If you want to conquer super-steep hills, then you need to look at a much more powerful scooter (and consequently heavier and more expensive). Consider the Zero 9 or Mercane WideWheel (dual motor edition) for better hill conquering ability.
Swagtron Swagger 5: cheap scooter for heavier riders
The Swagger 5 is another one of the top adult electric scooters and has some key advantages over the GoTrax, depending on what you are looking for.
First, the Swagger 5 has an incredible 320 lb weight capacity which is more than you’ll see on scooters costing 3X more! This is one of the main reasons the Swagger 5 is one of the best motorized adult scooters you can buy. Secondly, the Swagger 5 has one pneumatic and one solid tire. Though we don’t advocate for solid tires, this will reduce some of your maintenance worries.
The Swagger 5 has a very similar design to the more expensive Xiaomi Mi 365 and the manufacturer is likely using some of the same base components. However, the range is about half that of Mi M365 and batteries are not as good.
For an in-depth look, check out our Swagtron Swagger 5 Review.
Also available, though less discounted, through Amazon Prime.
- Great for heavy riders — 330 lb weight capacity
- Solid rear tire for decreased flats
- Dirt cheap scooter with Mi M365 knock-off design
- Lower build quality than Mi M365
- Solid tire and no suspension gives this a rough ride
- Lower battery capacity and cheaper batteries than Mi M365
Xiaomi Mi M365
The Xiaomi Mi M365 finds itself on (or at the top) of many best electric scooter rankings for adults. This is for good reason. We chose the Xiaomi Mi M365 for our best adult scooters list because it is one of the most well-balanced scooters. It has an excellent feature set (range, weight, top speed, quality) and at a great price point.
For an in-depth look at the Xiaomi Mi M365, read our review.
- Lots of hackability, modifications, upgrades
- Super portable
- “Last mile” commuting
- More premium entry-level scooter
- Daily commuting of 10 to 15 miles
- Large user-base for availability of parts and support
Compared to the GoTrax GLX Commuter V2, you’ll get almost 50% more range and access to do firmware hacking for faster top speed and custom braking programs. The higher price point will also get you blue-tooth enabled smartphone connectivity, though we personally prefer speed and other cockpit features to be built in to the scooter itself, which is what Xiaomi has done for the upcoming M365 Pro update.
The Mi M365 is great on the flat, but the 250 watt motor and timid firmware make this scooter not great on hills. You can mitigate some of this by upgrading the firmware, but you do need to be technically savvy and risk bricking your scooter.
The Mi M365 lacks a built-in information display (speedometer, odomoter, etc). You must install the bluetooth-enabled app and have your phone out while using the scooter to get this information. This means you’ll need an attachable phone mount (or to ride with just one hand).
The Zero 8 represents the start of the truly quality best adult scooters with well-established companies that have been designing, selling, and distributing electric scooters for decades. The Zero brand is a legend in Singapore, the Philippines, and other countries, where electric scooters have been long-established as a means of transportation.
The Zero 8 is in a completely different class compared to the budget Xiaomi, Swagger, and GoTrax scooters. It’s kind of like buying an inexpensive bicycle from a local bike shop compared to one from a department store or Walmart — the construction quality is completely different and the product is meant to last.
For about 13 more pounds of weight, compared to a M365, you get way more power (500 W motor), greater range, dual suspension, and serious build quality. The stem is adjustable and handlebars can be folded down to make a very compact and portable package. Additionally, the all folding mechanisms are solid when locked into place.
For an in-depth look at the Zero 8, read our review.
Check our deals page for a Zero 8 coupon code (through RevRides).
- The Zero 8 is the king of the under $1,000 electric scooter class
- Good hill climbing ability (though you will be noticeably slowed)
- Very portable
- Great range-to-weight ratio
- Dual suspension gives comfortable ride
- Rear tire is solid — we would prefer dual pneumatic
- Lights are mounted very low which isn’t good for visibility
- Single drum braking system — we would like to see one backup brake
The Zero 9 is the bigger, better brother of the Zero 8 with bigger all-pneumatic tires, an additional disc brake, and a more powerful motor.
Pushing $1,000, the Zero 9 is not a cheap scooter, but you get what you pay for. In the case of the Zero 9, one of the top 10 electric scooters, this ends up being quite a bit. The dual braking system with disc and drum brakes, 9″ pneumatic tires, a powerful 600 W motor, and long range round out the package.
It is for these reasons, and for the fact that the Zero 9 received the highest (4.6/5) customer support rating, that the Zero made the best adult electric scooters list. The Zero brand itself has 4.3/5 overall satisfaction, also one of the highest.
The Zero 9 is distributed in the US exclusively by RevRides. Nathan, the founder has been excellent with support and knowledge.
For an in-depth look at the Zero 9, read our review.
Check out our deals page for a Zero 9 coupon code.
The Zero 9 excels at:
- Excellent hill climbing ability
- Great for daily round-trip commuting up to 24 miles
- Dual suspension and 9″ pneumatic tires smooth-over rough urban roads
- Superb quality, durability, brand reputation
Quality parts are heavy and bigger battery capacity make the scooter heavier (40 lbs) compared to cheaper, run-of-the-mill models that are less than 30 lbs.
The 600 W motor will take you up steep hills at a decent speed, but isn’t quite powerful enough to fly up them at full speed.
The Mercane WideWheel (dual motor version) is a surprisingly fast scooter at budget price-point. For the speed, acceleration, and range, this scooter feels like some of the more premium and beastly scooters we’ve tried, but is nearly half the cost. For this reason, we like to think of it as a “cheap thrill” (we mean it in the good way). It is a blast to ride without being scary.
Additionally, the WideWheel is one of the least expensive scooters with real, excellent hill climbing ability.
The WideWheel is distributed by Fluid FreeRide. We’ve been in contact with Julian, the founder, for questions about the WideWheel and technical support. Service and support has been excellent.
The unique, ultra-stable and comfortable ride, thrilling performance, and available US support give the Mercane WideWheel a place as one of the best electric scooters you can buy right now.
For an in-depth look at the Mercane WideWheel, read our review.
- Superior hill climbing ability
- Great for comfortable cruising
- Ultra-stable due to 4″ wide wheels
- Thumb throttle gives easy access to brakes
The Mercane is a super stable, fast, and very fun to ride electric scooter. The dual-motor version, which we tested, has amazing hill conquering ability. All in all, the ride is very comfortable due to the large, wide wheels and dual suspension. Finally the WideWheel has minimal maintenance due to solid (airless) tires (though we aren’t advocates for solid tires).
- Limited maneuverability
- Tight suspension
- Limited display screen
- Difficult mode selection
- Less established manufacturer; not as solid as a Zero
Making turns on the WideWheels takes some getting used to due to the ultra-wide tires. This is the drawback of stability. To make sharp turns you need to go slow and lean into the turn.
At 44 lbs the WideWheel, though still portable and collapses into a neat package, close to the edge where carrying it extensively becomes difficult.
Solid, non-pneumatic tires aren’t our favorite. However the suspension and extra wide tire contact patch does help to mitigate traditional drawbacks of solid tires. The US based sellers do not recommend riding in slippery conditions.
Construction quality isn’t as good as ultra-premium electric scooters like the Dualtron or Zero 10X. If you want a scooter to ride really hard, then you may run the WideWheel into the ground. However, if you’re more reasonable and need something fun and fast for cruising around this is the perfect scooter.
Some version of this scooter will eventually become the best selling general purpose scooter and this is why we consider it one of the top electric scooters for adults. It is very well-balanced — like the Toyota Camry or Honda Accord of scooters. It is not fully luxury, but is big enough, powerful enough, and comfortable enough to suit the widest variety of needs out there.
This eMove Cruiser is one of the best long-ranged scooters out there and possibly the most complete scooter.
Be sure to check out our in-depth eMove Cruiser Review.
- Electron sipping motors provide amazing range
- Very well-rounded, solidly designed scooter
- One of the best folding mechanisms on any scooter
Because the controller is well designed (you don’t accelerate fast) the battery seems to last forever. Whereas when we tear up the fast models, they seem to deplete the batteries quickly. This will win the marathon.
At 55 lbs, the scooter is just beyond the 45 lb maximum that we consider suitable for true portability.
The downside of the electron-sipping controller is that the scooter, like a Camry, isn’t fun like a WideWheel. It doesn’t have that youthful zip that you may want to unleash on the weekends (though this thing will go the distance).
Zero 10X: best Dualtron challenger
The Zero 10X is an amazing bang for your buck — you get a 77 lb monster scooter with dual 1000 W motors and legendary build quality at a fraction of the cost.
We call this scooter the Dualtron killer, because it is one of the few that can legitimately challenge some of the Dualtron models. The awesome value, feature set, build quality, and brand reputation, helped the Zero 10X get a place among the other best electric scooter for grown ups (note: it’s currently less than $2,000 with a Zero 10X coupon code).
Though, as you move to the top end of the Dualtron spectrum (see our Dualtron review and comparison for more info), the higher-end Dualtrons will outpace it in terms of raw power and torque.
For these reasons, the Zero 10X earned a spot as one of the top picks.
For an in-depth look at the Zero 10X, read our review.
- Best suspension
- Supreme 330 lb weight capacity
- Stem stability
- Dual 1000 W Motors
- Long wheelbase improves stability
- Amazing value
The Zero 10X will give you Dualtron-like performance and quality, but at a budget price. This scooter also has a unique color scheme that will draw attention.
We prefer the suspension on the Zero 10X above any other scooter, period. It is basically a trampoline and does an amazing job gobbling up the imperfections in the road. The Zero 10X stem collar has two clamping mechanisms and is about double the length of the Dualtron lineup giving it less wobble than its worthy rivals.
Construction is bomb proof — we punished this scooter extensively during the 2019 Electric Scooter Roadtrip and were not able to harm it.
- Not portable – handlebars do not fold, stem does not lock down when folded
- Cheap key mechanism
- Stem can be a bit finnicky
Dualtron Spider: pound-for-pound champion
The Dualtron Spider is high-performance scooter in an exceptionally compact, lightweight, and portable package. The dual motors ensure you will be able to merge in and out of traffic easily. The scooter is not small like a M365, but at 44 lb it is light enough to carry for short distances and bring up into an office or apartment. We believe this is simply the best city commuting electric scooter you can buy right now.
The Dualtron Spider made the Top 10 Best Electric Scooters list for its supreme build quality, range, and power packed into a relatively compact and lightweight package.
For an in-depth look at the Dualtron Spider, read our review
- The best premium commuter scooter period
- Incredible power-to-weight ratio
- Legendary MiniMotors build quality
- Folding mechanism is squeaky and wobbles a bit
- You’ll need some accessory parts to lock the stem down for carrying
The one thing it lacks that is easily remedied is a locking mechanism for carrying it by the neck once folded. This can be remedied with some simple modifications (see Spider modifications). Stem issues are common among most high-end scooters due to the extreme force exerted from the handlebars to the stem-to-base-hinge.
Dualtron Thunder: the fastest electric scooter
The Dualtron Thunder is our top pick for an adult electric kick scooter over $3k; it is the best fast electric scooter and simply the baddest mass-market scooter available today from an established brand — MiniMotors.
If you have never ridden a high performance electric scooter before then you simply can’t imagine the torque and brutal acceleration that the Thunder packs.
For an in-depth look at the Dualtron Thunder, read our review.

- Power, acceleration, range, top speed
- Incredible build quality
- Baddest scooter on the planet
This is the fastest electric scooter from an establish manufacturer. It not only manages up the steepest hills in San Francisco, it literally accelerates fast enough to give tourists whiplash.
The scooter is bomb-proof. We absolutely thrashed it during the 2019 Electric Scooter Roadtrip. During the Roadtrip it survived: repeated loading/unloading from the uhaul trailer, top speed riding on city streets, uphill speed tests, and of course sunset burnouts.
At a pricetag of over $3,000 USD, the Thunder costs more than some cars! However, you might just use it to replace your car and it is quite a bit cheaper per mile.
The scooter is almost 100 lbs — you’re not going to be taking this on the bus with you or throwing it into the back of an Uber (unless you’re The Rock). However, the scooter isn’t designed for that — the Thunder is designed for getting around on its own two wheels. Fast.
